GPISD uses CSCOPE as it's curriculum. They now have a Parent Portal available! You can see what your child is learning each nine weeks in Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. It also has fabulous resources for parents to use at home that correlate with what we are working on in class. There is no login requirement! Click on the link to check it out. Let me know if you have any questions!
Updated Calendar!
Parents, please notice the calendar to the left has been updated! Red Ribbon Week is October 24-28. More info will be coming home about dress up days and activities. We will be attending the Nature Center on November 4th. Because this is part of our science curriculum, we do not take parent volunteers on this trip. We will be asking for volunteers on our next field trip though! More info will be coming in regards to the Nature Center! Please let me know if you have any questions!
Online Scholatic Book Fair
The online book fair begins today! It will run for 2 weeks! You can see the books by visiting this website:
You will click on the state, city, and school and it will take you to Whitt's page. There are more books available than were at school. This is an excellent resource for parents who work and were unable to come visit last week. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends who live far away can also purchase your child a book if they wish! Whitt PTA will still receive the profit for the online book fair just like the one at Whitt last week! Please let me know if you have any questions!
Also, teachers have created a wish list online. Simply click on 'Classroom Wish Lists' in the orange bar, click the grade level, then teacher! You can purchase online! Have fun shopping and reading!!
September 12th
Today we read this book:
This was my first year to discuss 9.11 in my classroom. It was very interesting to hear what the kids have seen and heard either on TV or from talking to their families. They were very impressed that a group of first graders wrote and illustrated this book. :) We briefly discussed the events of 9.11. I wanted to focus more on how they thought first graders in 2001 felt, and how the book/ illustrations made us feel today. We decided first graders in 2001 must have been scared, sad, and brave. The illustrations litterally made the class speechless- for a few seconds (which is quite amazing for our little group!) Thier little chins dropped and they gasped. I was very impressed and proud of our converstaion today about such a "grown-up" topic!

Place Value Initials
This week we have been discussing place value in math. We are learning about ten longs and units and we have practiced by counting manipulatives. The kids have done really well! Today we made our initials out of paper ten longs and units. Then, the students counted how much their initial was "worth". They had a blast!
I found this great idea on another first grade blog- Crayon Bits! She has wonderful ideas!

Our computer station. Check out the Charlie Brown map! Sooo cute!
A close up of our clip chart- The kids love that they are able to move their clips up for good behavior!
Reading Corner- Daily 5 anchor charts will be added to this bulletin board as we create them in class
Listening station- you can also see the students' mailboxes on the right.
The Word Wall is up on the left. This is our Calendar area/ Word Work station. The felt board and magnetic easel are two areas students will complete word work activities. There is also a pocket chart on the back of the bookshelf and overhead for other word work stations.

Meet the Teacher
I wanted to do a quick post to let you know a little about me. This is my fourth year teaching first grade. I absolutely LOVE it, and I am so excited about this year! When I have the time, I take a spin class a couple days a week. It is my stress relief, it's a fabulous workout, and it is so much fun! I've definitely found something I love. I also enjoy being crafty when I have time. I love scrapbooking and anything I can Mod Podge. I put together a scrapbook this summer from my Europe 2010 trip that was almost 90 pages!! I had a blast with it! I also love to cook / bake. I guess that's why I workout! HA! Here are a few of my favorite things:
Diet Coke:
Seriously, I love diet coke.
The Container Store:
I love to organize almost anything. I'm a weirdo that actually enjoys cleaning, too. I enjoy the satisfaction of knowing where everything is, and making it look pretty in the process!
I'm a kid at heart. I guess that is part of why I love first grade so much! I love Disney movies, especially the classics. Beauty and the Beast is my all time favorite!
I also love Charlie Brown! Anything Charlie Brown just makes me smile!
Mexican Food:
My good friends and I go eat after school about once a week! Gloria's, El Fenix, Taco Cabana, Little Mexico, Don Pablos, Mi Cocina... Love them all!
And last but not least, TARGET:
What can I say? I can spend hours there! And a few dollars too! ;-) Half my home and classroom came from Target. The dollar spot is a teacher's best friend! I'm convinced the air in Target has something special in it! It just makes me feel so happy!!
Well, there's a little about me! I can't wait to get to know all of my 'firsties' this year as well as their families!
